"What size?" is the question we get more than any other. It's the right one to ask. Size is what separates a ceiling that looks planned from one that looks sparse, and it's the hardest decision to undo once everything is already hanging.

The Short Answer

If you're buying one size and you want it to work: 16 inch. It reads from across a room, it's inexpensive enough to buy in volume, and it hangs comfortably under an 8-foot ceiling. 12 inch is the second pick, better in clusters and easier to fit in tight spaces like a covered patio or a low-ceilinged hall.

6 to 12 Inch: Filler and Clusters

A 24 inch lantern needs room around it. Give it at least 3 feet of clear space on every side or it crowds whatever is next to it.

30 and 36 Inch: One Lantern Is the Whole Statement

Jumbo lanterns are a different category. A single 36 inch lantern over an entryway does more work than a dozen 12 inch lanterns spread across the same ceiling, and guests notice it on the way in.

Two rules. Give them height: 10 feet of ceiling minimum, more if you have it. And don't crowd them. Three jumbos across a 20-foot span is a design. Nine is a traffic hazard.

Mixed installs almost always read better than uniform ones. A ratio that holds up: for every 1 large lantern (24 inch or bigger), hang 2 mid-size (14 to 18 inch) and 3 small (10 to 12 inch).

Before you pick a size, measure the ceiling. Leave at least 7 feet of clearance under the bottom of the lantern anywhere people walk. Over tables you can drop lower, to about 6 feet, since nobody is standing there.

That clearance requirement is why an 8-foot ceiling caps you around 16 to 18 inches, and why jumbo lanterns only make sense in a barn, a tent with a real peak, or a ballroom. A 36 inch lantern under an 8-foot ceiling isn't a focal point. It's an obstacle.
