How to Make Hanging Paper Lanterns

Our DIY paper lanterns use all of your favorite grade-school crafting techniques, most notably paper mache. Before you get started - but not too long before, as you don't want the mixture to harden or dry - you want to mix up your paper mache solution. You'll also want to tear the rice paper into 1-inch long strips before getting started. Remember, the color rice paper you choose is the color your lantern will be, so choose wisely!

1. To make the paper mache mix, combine one-part water with one-part flour and stir until all the lumps have disappeared.

2. Inflate the balloon and tie your fishing wire or string around the area where you tied the balloon's knot. Hang the balloon from a hook or the ceiling so that you can work from all angles around it.

3. Dip the rice paper strips into the paper mache mix, carefully wiping any excess mixture off by sliding each piece between two fingers. Working around the balloon, apply the strips vertically until the balloon is completely covered. Allow the solution to dry.

4. Once your paper mache strips have dried enough to create a self-standing globe, you can pop the balloon and remove it from the center. Cut a hole into the top of the globe so that you can add lights and hanging hardware.
